ASM Student chapter meeting minutes                                                                                     09/10/2019

• Introduction:

  • Introduce the executive board

    • Beth – President

    • Gabby Keb – Vice President

    • Tanner DuCote – Public relations

    • Zaria Elery – Secretary

    • Charles Seaks – Treasure

    • Dr. Erin Garcia – Faculty rep

  • Explain what ASM is:

    • New chapter to UKy (network within the university and with other universities)

    • ASM Mission: promote and advance microbial sciences across the globe through publications, advocacy, collaborations, etc.

    • Tackle global health issues

  • Objectives of this specific student chapter:

    • Professional development (advocacy, industry, etc.)

    • Webinars

    • Workshops (science communication, CV’s, Grants, fellowships etc.)

    • Local outreach (collaborate with other organizations at UKy)

    • Connect with Tutors

    • Research opportunities for undergraduates

    • Mentorship

    • Social activities (tour hospitals, bakery, brewery or winery)

  •  Chair positions:

    • Undergraduate representatives: Katie Alexander and Taylor Senay

    • Graduate representative- open

    • Post-Doctoral representative-open

    • Underrepresented/minorities representative – open

  • ASM membership:

    • Discounted price for some conferences

    • Scholarships

    • Online resources

Infectious Disease Day: October 17th 8am-5pm: Free conference at UK (lunch provided), we will be inviting our sister chapters WKU and Miami university (Ohio). Visit https://uk-conference-manager.firebaseapp.com/#/conferences to register. If you want to present a poster abstracts are due by 11:59pm on Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Biobonanza: First outreach event October 5th 11-2pm Jacob Science Building. Opportunity to demonstrate research to the community. Science activities for kids K-12. Our ASM chapter will have 2 tables; 1 will be an antibiotic resistance activity, and we would like ideas for an activity for the 2nd table (email Tanner with ideas Tannerjdeucote@uky.edu)
